Revamped model to feature as part of Ford's three-car attack on mid-size market – including two varieties of Focus

Ford has showcased the new China-only Escort, a mid-size saloon it will sell in the country alongside the new Focus, at the Beijing motor show.

The first-generation Focus replaced the Escort in most global markets when it was launched in 1998, but the model name was reintroduced in China in 2014 for a car based on a second-generation Focus.

The new Escort will be sold in China alongside both the current Ford Focus and the soon-to-arrive fourth-generation Focus. Ford says it offers three similarly-sized models because of the magnitude of the mid-size car market in China – around 7.3 million cars in 2017, making up 31% of the passenger car market.

The Escort will be built on Ford’s new global mid-size car platform, and will be offered with a choice of 1.0- or 1.5-litre engines and six-speed manual or automatic gearboxes.

The interior has a two-tone colour scheme designed to appeal to young Chinese buyers and features including an 8in infotainment touchscreen.

The Escort is one of a host of models being shown at the Beijing show, as part of Ford’s China 2025 expansion plan.

Other machines on display include the Mondeo Energi PHEV, the electrified model it will offer in China.
