The British racing driver won the Formula 1 title in a McLaren 40 years ago, and the P1 GTR has been finished in a black with red, yellow and blue stripes, a livery Hunt originally based on his Wellington College colours.
McLaren Automotive itself has entered the car in the Festival of Speed, and Bruno Senna, a mentor for McLaren’s P1 GTR Driver training programme, was among the drivers who drove it up the hill on Lord March's estate.
A P1 GTR modified for road use by Lanzante was also at the event, attempting to set a record time for a road car on the hillclimb. The current record stands at 49.27sec, set by Jann Mardenborough in a Nissan GT-R Nismo Time Attack in 2014.
The Lanzante P1 GTR is an extensively modified version of McLaren Special Operations’ original. 1999 Indianapolis 500 winner and McLaren test driver Kenny Bräck was driving it up the 1.16-mile hill.
Lanzante was the company that ran the semi-works McLaren F1 GTR that won the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1995. The company has now completed an experimental prototype version of its P1 GTR road car conversion and has entered this in the class for Modern GT Racers at Goodwood.
Visually, the car resembles a McLaren P1 GTR albeit with road car modifications that have been designed and developed by Lanzante.
