Codenamed Y400, the large SUV will be Ssangyong’s flagship model and is set to cost less than £30,000 when it goes on sale

The new Ssangyong Rexton has been revealed and its name officially confirmed ahead of its public debut at the Seoul motor show this week.

The SUV will continue the Rexton name internationally - but will be called G4 Rexton in Korea - and will be available with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

It will go on sale in Korea during the first half of this year and in other markets by the end of 2017 with a host of new tech including Apple Carplay, Android Auto, '3D Around View Monitoring' and a 9.2in screen. Ssangyong says the Rexton’s successor will also major on safety.

The first official picture of the production model shows the SUV draws heavily from the LIV-2 concept shown at the Paris motor show last year.

The Korean manufacturer says it will have a balanced weight distribution and towing capabilities, as well as improved refinement over the outgoing model.

The Rexton successor is 4850mm long, 1920mm wide, 1800mm high and gets a 2864mm wheelbase. It will be aimed squarely at the Hyundai Santa Fe in the large SUV market, and those measurements show the Ssangyong is bigger than its Hyundai rival.

The new Rexton will be the flagship model in Ssangyong’s range, above the Ssangyong Korando and a new seven-seat SUV that was previewed with the XAVL concept at the Geneva motor show.

It will come with a choice of a new 2.2-litre diesel and 2.0-litre turbo petrol engines, and equipment will include lane departure warning and autonomous braking. Pricing is expected to start at less than £30,000 in the UK, which would undercut the £32,230 Santa Fe.

Car review

The Ssangyong Rexton gets a refreshed look and far more luxury to go alongside its durability and cheap pricepoint, but overall it remains a determinedly old-fashioned SUV

Name

They'd do better if they ditched the Ssangyong and Rexton names. The car looks great with a decent interior

Haha Disco!

A LR is the worst ownership proposition ever, it would be a nightmare upkeeping it.

Looks OK

It's not bad looking but I agree that a second-hand Land Rover Discovery would make so much more sense and be a better ownership proposition.

How could a second hand Disco be e better ownership proposition? they will both be as capable as most people could ever want in the muddy stuff and the Rexton will have a towing capability of 3.5 tons too. Add in the potentially poor reliability of the Disco (speaking from experience, as well as publicised troubles)and the fact that the Rexton has a 5yr unlimited mileage warranty and I think the SsangYong puts up a strong case for itself. Of course, many people would still have the Disco, purely because it looks better outside the school gates or at the golf club! I hope the Ssanger is a success!
