Nissan has relaunched its Datsun brand with a supermini aimed at emerging markets. The Datsun Go is a small five-door, five-seat hatchback which will initially be sold in India costing “less than” 400,000 Indian rupees (£4400).
The Go is powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. It is 3785mm long, 1635mm wide and 1485mm high, endowing it with roughly the same footprint as a Nissan Micra, although the Go is 40mm lower. Its wheelbase is identical to the Micra.
Datsun will offer equipment including an MP3 dock and air-conditioning. However, Indian media reports Datsun is considering introducing a cut-price, entry-level version which could cost as little as 240,000 rupees (£2645). Such a model would cost around £200 more than the most expensive Tata Nano.
The Go has been developed in India and will be locally produced. It is the first of "several" models which will launch in late 2014 in Indonesia, Russia and South Africa.
The Go marks the return of Datsun after a 30-year absence and is designed to fill the gap at the lower end of the market, below the cheapest Nissan and Renault models. The relaunch follows Renault’s expansion of the budget Dacia brand.

Why?
Why bring back a name that has been dead and buried/forgotten about for decades? It was a cheapo brand (apart from the brilliant 240Z) anyway, so it's not as if there will be many people clamouring for its return.
Would it not make more sense to just announce this car as the new Nissan Micra? (It looks nicer than the current Micra, which is "over-designed", so has potential).

Unfortunate name
There was a chocolate bar called "Go" which was unsuccessful. Market research revealed potential customers suspected it was covered in laxative chocolate! Hopefully this vehicle does not have handling characteristics which produce distressing consequences.

If that's a picture of the 400K rupee version what's the 240K rupee version going to be like? No seats, standing room only? Windscreen wipers an optional extra?
How spartan can a car become?

You must be quite young if you think this car is spartan. Its luxury compared to small cars I used to drive. In the image you can see it has air con, very indulgent, it even has electric windows. This is not a budget model. Standards are high, I would imagine even their lower trim version has a radio, my first cars did not have a radio, and having 2 door mirrors was high spec. Cars are way overspecced in all sectors. Thats is because the profits come from trim and percieved features.

I'm old enough to have visited one of first Datsun dealerships in Scotland and can remember my uncle trading in his Datsun 1600. The showroom had a dark metallic blue 160B, a red 240Z and some monstrosity called the 280 in a beautiful brown! I can't remember seeing the 100 (Cherry) but I do remember sitting in a 120Y coupe (Sunny) which was almost the exactly same colour as the GO in the above picture! I'm sure they used to call it Aqua Blue.
And as far as I can remember, all those cars interiors in 1969 looked much busier than the GO.

It looks like a Nissan Micra that's had its curves straightened out. Why do some budget cars have to look bland or challenging?
